So bass has evolved from the bha-bha era, a la Beatles and tejano music respectively. But what makes a good bass line? Is it the player? How many of u can hum the bass line to Michael Jackson’s ”Billy Jean”? Ok…. Now how many of u know the bass player behind this mysterious meter magic? Haha… I personally do not know. But who cares that’s not the point here. The Point is that this guy made a line a few notes and BAM! A little piece of history baby! Alright, that we’re past this part let’s go to the next… As in music theory you have 7 notes total in any basic major scale…. Why is this important u ask? Well for this segment we will look at them like this…. 1=Major chrd=Ionian, 2=Minor chrd=Dorian, 3=Minor=Phrygian, 4=Major chrd=Lydian, 5=dominant 7th chrd=Mixolydian, 6=Minor chrd=Aolian, 7=Diminished=Locrian…. the number is the position in the scale, the chord would be what u play on guitar, and the last is the mode u could use…. so try each and instead of playing it in sequence…. take ur time and try and make a flowing bass line for each chord and mode…. If u have a drum machine try this…. as ur playing ur bass line… stop change the beat stlye from ex. 8th beat pattern to a samba… keep changing them…. follow the hi-hat then the bass drum on each pattern… this practice helps u to identify groove without altering the harmonic feel of ur creation.
2nd Part-Alright, so last time we spoke of notes and scales. But the responsibility of a bassist is more than just notes. Rythm and timing is very important. So is space. When to play when not to play… So on and so forth. One piece of advise is just play the crap out of a song…. When you can play a song.. On any instrument, by yourself, and have it sound amazing.. I mean you can bang your head to it… That means you’re getting there. Tapping your foot, the old basic routine, always helps….
